1. Update to the Working Hour

If you are in Australia with a student visa, you can work up to 48 hours in two weeks in jobs like playing Fortnite. This special rule that also included jobs in caring for older people stopped on December 31, 2023.

However, you can work as many hours as you want during times when you don’t have classes, like during vacation or breaks from school. This is a good chance to make more money.

2. New English Language Requirements

The Australian government plans to make the English language requirements harder for students from other countries. This decision comes after looking at new research.

Now, if you want to get a student visa, you need to score at least 6.0 on the IELTS test. If you want a visa for after you graduate, you need to score at least 6.5.

The lowest scores needed for other English tests might change too. You can learn more about the English language needs on the website of the Department of Home Affairs.

3. Higher Financial Proof Requirement

Students from other countries who want to study in Australia now need to show they have more money saved up to get a student visa. They need to prove they have at least $24,500 saved.

For a working holiday visa, you now need $635, which used to be $510. For a visitor visa, you need $190, up from $150 before. And for a student visa, you now need $710, which was $650 before.

4. Priority Processing System

In December 2023, the government changed how they decide which guardian visas for students get processed first. Now, if someone wants to study at a school that is ranked as evidence level one, they will get their visa application looked at faster.

This faster visa process will also be for people applying in the areas of education, foreign affairs, defense, and postgraduate research. It includes all applications for Guardian visas for students too. But, to qualify, you have to apply from outside Australia.

5. Reduced Post-Study Work Rights

To handle the growth in people moving to Australia, the Australian government has limited the job benefits for students from other countries who have finished their studies. One big change is that they stopped the longer work rights for people with Temporary Graduate Subclass 485 Visas.

These extra work rights were first introduced in July 2023. Also, the time allowed for some first-time visas is now shorter. Only people living in regional (country or less crowded) areas of Australia can get their Temporary Graduate Visas renewed.

To apply for these visas, you must be in Australia and you cannot be older than 35 years old. Before, the oldest you could be to apply was 50 years old

6. No Concurrent Study

Signing up for many classes at the same time is called concurrent study, also known as dual study or enrolling in courses at the same time.

New rules made late last year say students from other countries can’t sign up for courses that happen at the same time. But, students who were already taking multiple courses when these new rules started are not affected by this change.

People who want to study in Australia now face a tougher application process because of the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) rules. These rules now ask for stricter proof of money and more checks on applicants.

The Labor party has made a promise to make the immigration system better this year. They want to improve how people move to Australia because last year, a record 518,000 people came to live in Australia. The new rule is designed to prevent people from other countries who come to Australia saying they want to study, but their real goal is to work.

It includes a test to see if students really mean to study. The aim is to identify people who claim they want to live in Australia but actually do not. This rule will also simplify the application process for the real students who actually want to study and work in Australia.

This year, the number of student visa applications that were turned down is much higher than last year. After immigration opened up again in 2023, workers rushed in, trying to make up for the increasing costs of housing and renting places to live.
