Two Special Programs: The Home Child Care Provider Program and the Home Support Worker Program will accept new applications from January 1, 2024, at 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). If you’re a caregiver and your family wants to live in Canada for good, these programs are for you.

Two Ways to Stay Forever: These programs last for five years and can help caregivers and their families become Canadian citizens permanently. You can choose one of two ways to apply: either go straight for permanent residency or first gain some work experience. Be aware that you’ll need to pay a fee to apply, starting at $CAN 1,085.

1. Direct Path to Permanent Residence

If you already have 12 months of relevant work experience, you and your family can apply for permanent residence directly. You can do this through either the Home Support Worker Pilot or the Home Child Care Provider Pilot.

2. Gaining Experience

For those who have less than 12 months of work experience or no previous full-time caregiver work experience in Canada, there’s another option called the Gaining Experience category. If you’ve worked as a caregiver full-time in Canada for a total of 12 months or more within the past 36 months, you can apply under the Direct Path to Permanent Residence category.

Changes in Work Experience Requirements

Canada has made a big change in the work experience needed for domestic caregivers to apply for permanent residence. In the past, caregivers needed 24 months of experience, but now only 12 months are needed.

Applicants must show Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) proof of enough experience, especially if they applied under the “Gaining Experience” category before.
