What Does the Africa Excellence Scholarship Offer?

The scholarship provides AU$1250 per 10 units of study.

Valued at AU$10,000 each year under a standard full-time study load of 80 units, it’s directly applied as a tuition fee reduction to your student account for each term of study.

This is adjusted according to approved reduced study load, credit exemptions, progression, or enrolment above full-time study load.

Criteria for the Africa Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility for this scholarship is contingent on a few conditions:

  • You must be a passport holder from one of the 54 African countries.
  • You should be commencing studies in an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree program at the University.
  • You must be an international full-fee-paying student.
  • The commencement of studies must be at an Australian or online campus as indicated in your Letter of Offer.
  • You must not be a recipient of another University scholarship, unless a special dispensation has been approved.
  • You must meet all financial obligations of a full-fee-paying international student, which includes the full tuition fee and other expenses for obtaining your student visa.
  • This also applies if eligibility for the scholarship is not maintained.

The Selection Process

The scholarship is automatically applied for upon application to the university (where eligibility criteria are met).

Successful students will be notified of the scholarship value with their Letter of Offer.

The university assesses all applications based on academic merit, following its procedures for determining ATAR and GPA.

Restrictions and Limitations

Not all students may be eligible. Internal transfer students studying at an Australian or Online campus and were not previously awarded the scholarship will not be eligible.

The same applies to students studying quota-limited programs. The university also reserves the right not to award the scholarship.

How to Apply

Applications are straightforward.

Eligible students who have received an offer to study in a qualifying, non-quota program and will commence their studies at the University of Newcastle are automatically awarded the scholarships.
