In 2000, Johannesburg Water SOC Ltd (JW) was incorporated, with business operations kicking off on the first day of the new year, 2001.

This organization is a crucial component of Johannesburg’s lifeline, functioning as an independent company under the sole proprietorship of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ).

JW’s formation can be traced back to the iGoli 2002 Transformation Plan.

This initiative was spearheaded by the former Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council, setting the groundwork for the organization that JW is today.

To be eligible for this life-changing apprenticeship, you must fall within the age bracket of 18 to 32 years, be unemployed, possess the relevant NATED N4 qualification, and be a citizen of South Africa.

This golden opportunity, however, is not open to those who have already participated in an apprenticeship programme before.

Step into the Real World – JW’s Diverse Trades

JW offers apprenticeships in three key trades, each with its unique learning experience and job potential.

Here is a closer look at each trade and the positions available:

1. Electrician (3 positions): Requires an N4 Electrical Engineering qualification.
2. Welder (1 position): Requires an N4 Mechanical Engineering (Welding) qualification.
3. Mechanical Fitter (4 positions): Requires an N4 Mechanical Engineering (Fitting) qualification.

All apprenticeships are based within JW’s Technical Services division.

Joining the Apprenticeship Programme – The Application Process

Preparing Your Application

Prepare required documents before applying.

These include:

• A completed JW Apprenticeship application form
• Certified copies of your N4 Qualification for the relevant trade
• Valid ID copy (within 3 months) required.

Submitting Your Application

Submit your applications electronically, quoting the relevant reference number and job title in the line subject of your correspondence.

The Selection Process – An Emphasis on Employment Equity
