About the ICRC

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was started in 1863. It helps people affected by wars and violence and works to promote laws that protect people in conflicts. The ICRC is independent and neutral, following the Geneva Conventions of 1949. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and has about 18,000 employees in over 90 countries. The ICRC mainly gets its funds from donations by governments and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Our Mission

The ICRC’s work is guided by the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols, along with the rules of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It is an independent and neutral group that provides help and protection to people affected by war and violence. The ICRC responds to emergencies and works to ensure respect for international humanitarian laws and their adoption in national laws.
